Men are no longer restricted by their traditional stereotypical traits such as avoidance of feminine behavior, power hungry, aggressive, unemotional, and marked by homophobia (excessive hate and fear of gays). Men have been given the green light to do things considered girlish or sissy-like by pop culture, marketing by the cosmetic and luxury goods industries, and TV shows like Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

Another theory of the source of the shift in men’s behavior might be the women’s movement and the striving of ‘equality’ by women. As women take more and more ‘territory’ from men and become more and more masculine, the men have found equality by becoming more feminine.

Men can be seen in urban areas wearing designer labels, carrying accessories, using ‘product’ on their hair and purchasing skin care products from department store cosmetic counters. They take time and effort to look good and take care of their hair- not only on their face and head, but also all over- trimming, shaving, even waxing!!
David Beckham, and Brad Pitt were identified as the poster children for the metrosexual movement.

During our discussion last night we agreed that the metrosexual male is a trend for the future and will not be disappearing anytime soon. Women for the most part seemed to like the idea of this ‘new man’ and his lack of fear of showing his feminine side and being more fashion conscious while some women still liked their men to be ‘real men.’
After chatting a while about the influences of the media and marketing on men and how the message that ‘it’s OK to be metrosexual’ has been beaten into everyone’s awareness, we took a metrosexual quiz to see if we (or boyfriends) were considered metrosexual or not. Discussion was interesting and everyone had something to share- even me- I admitted doing mud-masks from time to time and using skincare products!!
