Are you an extrovert or introvert? Are you open to new ideas or closed-minded? Do you lead or do you follow? Are you emotionally balanced or do you have mood swings?
Personality is controlled by both genetics and environment- some personality traits are inherited, but many more are established through your family environment and the experiences you have growing up. What makes you tick? This was the topic this week in my modern topics class.
We investigated both the pop tests such as the Zamora Personality Test which seemed to give almost identical personality evaluations for different people; with the results and traits just rearranged, and standard personality tests such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, test where subjects answer questions about their own tendencies and are classified along four opposing scales—introversion and extroversion, sensing and intuition, thinking and feeling, judging and perceiving. The results of this test bracket each person within a four-letter category. "ESTJs" for instance—extroverted, sensing, thinking, judging types—make natural leaders; they direct action and organize projects logically. The Myers-Briggs has been used for years by companies to select appropriate personnel for the fast-track.

One other personality test we investigated was one from Cal State, Fullerton. The results of this test seemed more useful than other tests samples giving a more accurate measure of a person’s personality than the other ‘pop’ tests.
Companies are using tests more and more abroad to select appropriate new personal and new tests are being used such as the NEO (Neuroticism, Extroversion and Openness) Personality Inventory, a subtler model than Myers-Briggs that measures five main traits: extroversion, neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness and openness. Another is the OPQ— Occupational Personality Questionnaire, which measures 32 factors, like sociability and the ability to persuade others.

We also talked about how accurate other popular personality indicators are such as blood type and which sign of the zodiac you are born under. Your star sign seems to be an accurate measure when you look at it, but many people feel it’s just for ‘reference’ as is blood type. Many people do not follow the typical personality traits pointed out by these two popular sources of information about people’s characters.
